General Qualifications-Admission Requirements:
• Must provide evidence of a valid driver's license. (Work Permits are NOT Accepted).
• Must be a high school graduate or have a G.E.D. and provide an official transcript for high school or G.E.D. training. Any post high school transcripts should also be submitted.
• Must provide reliable documentation for proof of age (minimum 18 years of age).
• Complete application form.
• Must be physically and mentally able to learn to safely perform essential functions of the job.
• Must be able to get to and from work at job sites anywhere within the geographical area that this apprenticeship program covers.
• Must be able and willing to attend all related classroom training as required to complete their apprenticeship.
• Must be able to climb and work from ladders, scaffolds, poles and towers of various heights.
• Must be able to crawl and work in confined spaces such as attics, manholes, trenches, and crawlspaces.
• Must be able to regularly lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds. On occasion, lift objects weighing above 50 pounds.
• Must be able to work in extreme hot and cold temperature conditions.
• Must be able to discriminate between colors.
• Must be able to operate two-handed power equipment.
• Must be able to read, hear and understand instructions and warnings.
• Must be able to pass a drug screen, medical evaluation and job task assessment upon being selected into the apprenticeship program.
NJATC Aptitude Test
• Once the applicant has completed the application requirements, they are scheduled to take an aptitude test,
which is given at the training center, usually once a month. The test covers algebra skills and reading/comprehension.
The applicant must receive a passing score in order to qualify for an oral interview.
Interview with the Cedar Rapids JATC:
• Those applicants who obtain a qualifying score on the NJATC Aptitude Test will be invited to have an oral interview with the Interview Committee. Qualifying applicants will be notified in writing of their interview date and time.
• Written offers of apprenticeship will be extended to those selected for the program. If selected to enter this training program, a drug/alcohol test and pre-employment physical are required.
Applicants interviewed, but not initially selected, will remain active in the Apprenticeship Applicant Pool for possible selection for a period of two (2) calendar years from the interview date, unless they request that their name be removed from the list or if they fail to meet a drug screen test.
Three programs to choose from:
Inside Wiremen perform installation & maintenance for commercial office buildings and all complexes, including petrochemical, pulp and paper plants, retail stores, hospitals, and manufacturing plants. Types of work include:
• Electrical Power & Lighting Systems
• Power Distribution & Metering Systems
• Motor Control & Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s)
• Building Automation Systems
• Energy Management Systems
• Packaging Systems, Manufacturing Systems, Refining Systems
• Backup Power Generation Systems
• Uninterruptible Power Supply Systems
Program details: 5-year Systematic Program includes 8,000 hours of paid On-The-Job Training and 950 hours of Related Study (classroom & lab). This apprenticeship program offers the apprentice a standard set of seven wage increases starting between $12.30 to $14.07 an hour and currently culminating at a completion wage of between $24.60 to $31.27 an hour.
Telecommunication Technicians perform installation and maintenance for all voice, data and video work in commercial office buildings, complexes, hospitals and industrial facilities. Types of work include:
• Telephone Systems
• Fiber Optic Networks
• Data Networks
• Fire Alarm Systems
• Nurses Call Systems
• CCTV Systems
• Security Systems
Program details: 3-year Systematic Program includes 4,800 hours of paid On-The-Job Training and 480 hours of Related Study (classroom and lab). This apprenticeship program offers the apprentice a standard set of six wage increases starting at $12.08 an hour and currently culminating at a completion wage of $24.15 an hour.
Residential Wiremen are trained to handle the installation, maintenance and integration of various electrical systems for the residential market. Types of work include:
• Residential Power and Lighting Systems
• Home Automation Systems
• Residential Telephone Systems
• Residential Television and Cable Systems
• Residential Climate Control Systems
Program details: 2-year Systematic Program includes 4,000 hours of paid On-The-Job Training and 380 hours of Related Study (classroom and lab). This apprenticeship program offers the apprentice a standard set of four wage increases starting at $12.54 an hour and currently culminating at a completion wage of $20.90 an hour.
